Enlisted Uniform and Equipment Research and Poster
Project. Each mess will be responsible for researching their assigned type of uniform and equipment. Each Mess will be creating a poster and presenting their poster and research to the class. The uniform types will cover a wide variety of the different armies in the field during the war. The project should focus on enlisted men, common soldiers, not officers. Deadline – Last in class work day, Thursday October 6th. Presentations begin Friday October 7th. Resources: Card board, colored pencils, and research time will be provided. Books from the classroom and the library will be available. The Internet may be used, especially the Library of Congress“Selected Civil War Photographs” directory. Outlawed: Any information from an online “sutler”, someone who sells reproduction uniform items to reenactors. Many “sutlers” sell items that are either imported from abroad, are poorly reproduced, or are not direct copies of original items. Exceptions to this rule are www.crchilds.com, www.cjdaley.com, both of whom publish research of the original items, and invaluable documentation. Requirements: ¨ 1“diagram” poster on poster board provided. ¨ Hand drawn/colored figure representing the type of uniform and equipment being researched. ¨ At least TWO photographs of an original soldier wearing an item on your poster. ¨ Brief written description of the type of soldier who would wear this uniform and/or where the uniform style came from. If you have a specific unit, be specific for that unit. ¨ Include distinctive features of the uniform, colors used, trim used, style and cloth types. Be specific. ¨ Include representations of equipment carried by that type of soldier and what the equipment was used for. ¨ Accuracy is VERY important! ¨ Be creative! ¨ Bibliography on your poster citing the sources for your research (Can be on the back). ¨ Presentation of approximately 7-10 minutes explaining your project. ¨ ONE LIFE SIZED PAINTING of the uniform you researched. See Example. Points – 150 Points, based on rubric. You will have work time in class Thursday (9/22) Friday (9/23) and Monday (9/26). You will turn in one Excel project for the group.
