Today I collected the Offences and Punishment discussion questions and we spent tme discussing military law and punishment
Tuesday we took a test about the signal corps skills which took most of the hour. All messes were able to complete the test in them time allotted. Remaining class time was spent reading Offences and Punishments in Hardtack and Coffee and completing the discussion questions for it.
We spent Monday discussing the field trip, and those who were not on the trip had some time to begin their alternative assignment.
We spent the time between Wednesday and Friday learning the Signal Corps methods of sending messages by Wig-Wag and encrypting messages using the vicksburg system.
Friday we spent some time working as a mess preparing ourselves for how to make the meal from issue rations for the field trip. Saturday was the field trip, and ti was of course wet and windy. When I said dress warm, I was not kidding. :) I was out sick.
Today we watched the Civil War Journal Episode about Flags during the Civil War. - Banners of Glory. Remaining class time was used to finish the reading in Hardtack and Coffee for "Talking Flags and Torches" and "Army Rations" The reading thus far in Hardtack and Coffee has focused on methods soldiers used to occupy their free time between marching and fighting. Camp life was often very dull and soldiers often sought escape from their day to day routine. Sex in the Civil War is an often forgotten piece of the story of soldier life. In a fabulous book called "The Story the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell: Sex in the Civil War", Dr. Thomas Lowry enlightens our view of the most taboo subjects in one of the world's most studied wars. If you have not read the book, it is available in large part on google books. http://tiny.cc/68n2s This lecture is based on that book.
